Good news, guys. Miura are releasing a new iron!

Any time Miura gears up for a new release, it’s a milestone. Boasting the most timeless iron designs in golf, the boutique Japanese iron manufacturer doesn’t adhere to golf’s customary one or two-year product cycle. In fact, Miura only commit to a new release when they are good and ready to proceed, after first establishing a tangible performance benefit.

Which brings us to the new Miura TC-202 iron. It’s a tour cavity iron that takes over from the Miura TC-201 iron, which was released over five years ago. Yep, five years ago.

Slotting in between Miura’s current MB-101 and CB-302 irons, the TC-202 bridges the gap between muscleback blade and cavity back iron. It’s more forgiving than the former and slightly smaller than the latter.

But the TC-202 features a throwback design component — pulled from Miura’s distinctive CB-57 iron — that improves stability and manoeuvrability. And it also enhances the famous Miura forged feel. Let’s take a closer look…

A MIURA REFRESHER

For those unfamiliar with Miura’s storied history, here’s what you should know.

Miura irons are forged in Japan. A signature forging process and spin-welded hosel construction form the foundation of Miura irons and are the elements responsible for producing the inimitable soft Miura feel. While feel and sound are subjective, there is no argument Miura irons offer some of the cleanest and most fulfilling feedback in the game.

Miura irons are famously constructed to the most stringent tolerances in the game. Every head is checked to confirm it’s within half a gram of the target weight. And every Miura iron is hand-finished and personally inspected by a member of the Miura family before being approved to leave the Miura factory in Himeji.

As you can probably guess by now, Miura’s attention to detail and precision elevates their irons into a completely different class.

The question, then, is: will the new Miura TC-202 irons perform as good as they look?

MIURA TC-202 IRONS: WHAT’S NEW

Refining the previous TC-201 iron was a tricky task given it was one of Miura’s most popular and successful models. Mess it up and you run the risk of rusted-on Miura loyalists assembling to riot…

So, Miura needed a new design that would outperform the TC-201 but still seamlessly merge the feel and precision of a muscleback blade with cavity-back forgiveness.

The solution lay in a concept first introduced in Miura’s classic CB-57 iron. Released over a decade ago, the CB-57 featured a distinctive central weight bar in its rear cavity.

After a methodical design process, Miura adapted the weight bar concept to make it more agile and fitted it to the rear cavity of the new TC-202 iron. It was the gamechanger Miura had been searching for.

While the TC-201 focused on mass placement in the heel and toe, Miura’s new T-Weight bar design focuses centre of gravity placement more vertically in the new TC-202 iron.

It positions mass behind the hitting zone to offer more of a bladelike feel, but also optimises mass placement to tune spin rates, launch trajectories and forgiveness throughout the set.

That isn’t easy to pull off in a forged iron, let alone one that doesn’t rely on tungsten weighting. But the new Miura TC-202 is engineered to be special…

TC-202 long irons have a low T-bar, the mid irons feature a more central T-bar, while the short irons and wedges have a thicker T-bar design set higher in the rear cavity. It instils a centre of gravity that is optimised for every shot: the long irons launch higher while the shorter irons launch a little lower than normal, spin more and offer more control.

Overall, the T-Weight bar makes the new Miura TC-202 iron slightly more forgiving than its predecessor while offering more defined performance in each loft. Yet the new T-Weight bar still lets you know instantly when you’ve hit one smack bang out of the sweet spot.

MIURA TC-202: Y GRIND

Miura’s Y grind sole design that featured on the TC-201 carries through to the new TC-202 iron. This time though, more relief has been taken out of the dual flange sole’s leading edge, improving turf interaction for players with a steep angle of attack.

The Y grind also sees the toe section of the TC-202 narrowed slightly, a move inspired by the Miura KM700 iron.

Removing mass from the toe balances the club and prevents the toe digging in at impact. The narrower toe moves through the turf more efficiently and should help deliver a squarer club face at impact.

MIURA TC-202: GET YOUR GAP WEDGE

The TC-202 iron is available in a three iron loft, a rare inclusion given the prevalence of hybrids and driving irons. However, Miura realise that TC-202 players like to have options; if they want a three iron, they’ll get a three iron.

However, that’s not the most surprising thing about the Miura TC-202 set.

Miura’s fitting research and feedback indicated players were using their gap wedges to play full wedge shots far more frequently than using them to chip. That information prompted Miura to include a gap wedge in the TC-202 set.

The addition of the gap wedge provides a uniformity in look, feel, fit and gapping (between the PW and GW) and maintains a flight window consistent with the rest of the TC-202 set.

MIURA TC-202: WHO ARE THEY FOR?

Make no mistake, Miura TC-202 irons are aimed at better ball strikers. But there’s a level of forgiveness that makes the new irons playable for scratch to mid-teen handicappers.

If you’re already a TC-201 player, the transition couldn’t be smoother. The irons retain the same offset, topline thickness and appearance at address but are optimised for more forgiveness and a more consistent flight profile.
