TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini Driver

We had an inkling TaylorMade might do something cool with their new mini driver. We just didn’t think they’d hit it out of the park. Seriously.

The new TaylorMade R7 Quad mini driver is a jaw-dropping release that integrates a little nostalgia with a lot of modern tech.

For those old enough to remember the original R7 Quad, your face is probably melting right now. For everyone else, a quick history lesson…

A HISTORY LESSON

Following on from the highly successful BRNR mini driver series, TaylorMade have once again trawled their back catalogue to pick a name for their new mini driver. And if you know the backstory, the R7 Quad is an excellent choice.

The TaylorMade R7 Quad mini driver references TaylorMade’s original 2004 driver of the same name.

As the first driver to feature moveable weight technology, it was revolutionary. The Quad referred to the driver’s four changeable weight screws, which controlled launch angle and shape bias depending on their configuration.

While we take that technology for granted in today’s drivers, the R7 Quad was the trailblazer that started it all.

HOW BIG IS THE TAYLORMADE R7 QUAD MINI DRIVER?

The new R7 Quad mini driver tips the scales at 305cc, a size that puts it in the middle of the mini driver category.

As a comparison, the 340cc Callaway Elyte mini driver is the category heavyweight while the 280cc Titleist GT280 is the featherweight. For reference, the original R7 Quad driver featured a 410cc head.

The mini driver does feature a deep face, which suggests it’s skewed towards tee ball use. But TaylorMade have tricked it up with enough versatility to make it a viable long-range fairway wood option too.

TAYLORMADE R7 QUAD MINI DRIVER TECH

The tech integration of the R7 Quad mini driver reads like a TaylorMade greatest hits compilation.

It features TwistFace to straighten up toe and heel strikes while the Speed Pocket on the sole injects extra forgiveness for low strikes — a significant inclusion when the mini driver is used off the deck.

The R7 Quad mini driver also features TaylorMade’s carbon fibre Infinity Crown, saving weight to be redistributed to more beneficial areas of the head where it can optimise launch and forgiveness.

In keeping with its R7 heritage, the new mini driver is installed with two 13g and two 4g weight screws in the four ports— two at the rear of the head and a heel/toe split at the front.

With the heavier weights in the rear port, the mini driver will launch higher and generate more stability — the recommended set-up for playing the mini driver off the deck.

Switching the heavier weights to the front will produce a more penetrating ball flight to maximise distance off the tee. Meanwhile, splitting the weights will induce a fade or draw bias.

WHAT ABOUT THE SHAFT?

While the throwback R7 Quad branding and head cover cuts through, the new mini driver exudes a thoroughly modern identity.

A major factor is TaylorMade’s decision to fit a Fujikura Speeder MD6 shaft as standard. The lightweight shaft offers a mid-flight trajectory and is designed to improve control and minimise spin rates. At 43.75” in length (the equivalent to a three wood) it should improve accuracy off the tee and is short enough to make it easy to hit the mini driver off the deck.

The TaylorMade R7 Quad mini driver comes in 11.5° and 13.5° lofts and will be available from May 2, 2025. Pre-orders begin April 16, 2025.
